PHILIP and FRANNIE LEACH have been producing beautiful earthenware from their studio in North Devon since 1978. The story of their journey as potters unfolds as they walk the viewer through the stages of making a set of tea bowls [chawan] and pressed dishes. Philip and Frannie have developed their own distinct style, combining decorative slips and glazes, making their work lively and vibrant. Influences from Iran, Japan and their roots in traditional English pottery keep their work fresh and unique. In this video they share their techniques on kneading, throwing and slab rolling, as well as demonstrating slipware decoration, including combing, trailing and impressing the clay. They also talk about the evolution of their unique glazes.
